Ever since her early days anchoring the chaotic brilliance of Odd Future as their resident DJ and producer, to fronting the slinky, Grammy-nominated neo-soul outfit The Internet, Sydney Bennett—professionally known as Syd—has been one of alternative R&B’s most essential innovators. She has quietly shaped the sound of a generation, writing and producing hits for icons like Beyoncé (Plastic on the Sofa), Kaytranada, and Kehlani. Four years after her critically acclaimed sophomore effort Broken Hearts Club, Syd is stepping back into the solo spotlight with a radical new mindset.

The Lead Single: “Callin” featuring Blu June

Giving fans their first taste of her new musical era, Syd has unleashed the smooth, smoky lead single “Callin.” The track features a stellar vocal performance from Blu June (one half of the powerhouse, Grammy-winning songwriting duo NOVA WAV, known for her extensive work with Beyoncé and Ariana Grande). “Callin” strikes a hypnotic balance between pop-leaning earworm hooks and Syd’s signature, atmospheric alt-R&B oddness. The track plays like a direct, relatable deep-dive into the frustrating cycle of modern unrequited love, blending a rolling, bass-heavy groove co-produced by Syd and NOVA WAV with instrumentation from the legendary Raphael Saadiq on bass.

The Third Studio Album: ‘Beard’ Arriving This July

The single serves as the official harbinger for Syd’s highly anticipated third solo studio album, titled Beard, officially slated to drop on July 17, 2026 via Free Lunch/Warner Records. This coming-of-age record is a true snapshot of her evolution as an artist and a human, boasting an elite roster of heavy-hitting contributors including Big Sean, Rodney Jerkins, James Fauntleroy, Van Hunt, and Jordan Ward.

The record marks the most confident, self-directed chapter of her solo career, a theme directly mirrored in its title. According to a press statement released by Syd, the name was born from a deeply personal journey of self-acceptance:

“The title was inspired by the peach fuzz on my upper lip that society has always taught me to hate. I fell in love with my peach fuzz and it made me rethink everything that was supposed to make me feel insecure. It allowed me to take my confidence into my own hands, and own everything that I am… The title also represents the way I see myself in relation to my peers, especially in music. ‘The bearded lady.’ Not so much a spectacle in my case, but an anomaly and an outlier. Hard to compare. I’m owning that too.”
