I’ve been a solid Flying Lotus fan since way back, like 07-08. Honestly, he’s just top 2 and not 2. Straight up. So what I’ve found in discovering my favorite tunes by him is really trusting how much power he can put behind vocals. I enjoy how electronic he’s willing to get with his beats, but there’s something behind his soulful songs that really carry it beyond R&B and into his own lane, which I really respect. Then when it comes to his instrumentals that aren’t vocal heavy, like a good lot of his previous work, you’ll see his talent shine in the glitchy behavior of the beat, the bassline still being sweet, and the harmony of tones blending so smoothly that it’ll make a fan out of any genre-fanatic that hasn’t heard of him yet.
